چکیده

The photometric U orbital variations of the symbiotic binary AG Dra, caused by occultation of a bright gaseous region by the K giant in this system, are used to derive the emission from the circumbinary nebula, that is supposed to be generated by the cool giant’s wind. Assuming spherical symmetry and constant expansion velocity for the wind, and that the giant has the same intrinsic continuum energy distribution of α Boo, we derive a cool giant’s radius of 28÷32 R and a distance of 1560÷1810 pc. We conclude that the cool giant does not fill its Roche lobe, which is contrasting with the intense, accretion powered X-ray emission.

IUE observations of the high-velocity symbiotic star AG Draconis III. A compendium of 17 years of UV monitoring, and comparison with optical and X-ray observations

We present the first extensive analysis of the ultraviolet observations with the IUE mission of the high velocity symbiotic system AG Draconis, covering the period June 1979– February 1996 which included three active phases of the system with six light maxima. The low resolution IUE line and continuum fluxes are compared with optical observations and with archival X-ray data. The analysis of th...

Spectral observations of AG Draconis during quiescence and outburst ( 1993 – 1995 )

High and intermediate resolution observations of the blue and the Hα spectral regions of the symbiotic star AG Dra at quiescence and during an active phase in 1994 and 1995 were performed. Variations of profiles, fluxes and radial velocity data of a number of emission lines are investigated. The width (FWHM) of all of these lines was very large at times close to the 1994 light maximum. The emis...

The Orbital Light Curve of Aquila X-1

We obtained Rand I-band CCD photometry of the soft X-ray transient/neutron-star binary Aql X-1 in 1998 June while it was at quiescence. We Ðnd that its light curve is dominated by ellipsoidal variations, although the ellipsoidal variations are severely distorted and have unequal maxima. After we correct for the contaminating Ñux from a Ðeld star located only away, the peak-to-peak amplitude 0A....

X - ray observations of 4 Draconis : symbiotic binary or cataclysmic triple ?

We present the first X-ray observations of the 4 Draconis system, consisting of an M3 III giant with a hot ultraviolet companion. It has been claimed that the companion is itself an AM Her-type binary system, an identification that places strong constraints on the evolution of cataclysmic variables. We find that the X-ray properties of 4 Draconis are consistent with the presence of an accreting...

The Recurrent Nova U Scorpii in the 1999 Outburst : the First Detection of a Significant Orbital - Period Change

In this paper we present and discuss our time-resolved photometry of an eclipsing recurrent nova, U Sco, during an outburst in 1999, which was conducted from immediately after the optical maximum to the final fading toward the quiescence. In the first-ever complete light-curve, a few primary and secondary eclipses of the binary system were detected, and the timings of the minima were determined...
